Alerta amarilla por frío extremo, nevadas y vientos: 18 provincias bajo amenaza este jueves

This Thursday, June 25, winter is making itself felt strongly in Argentina. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued a series of yellow alerts covering 18 provinces for extreme cold, snowfall, and strong winds. The agency warns that these meteorological phenomena «have the capacity for damage and risk of momentary interruption of daily activities.»

The yellow alert for snowfall affects the mountain range of Neuquén, Río Negro, and Chubut. Accumulations of between 5 and 10 centimeters are expected in plateau areas, and between 10 and 20 centimeters in mountainous areas. Authorities recommend avoiding outdoor activities, removing accumulated snow from roofs, driving with vehicles prepared for ice and snow, and ventilating homes to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. They also suggest having an emergency backpack ready with a flashlight, radio, documents, and phone.

On the other hand, the yellow alert for winds applies to Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego. In the high mountains, westerly winds with speeds between 50 and 70 km/h are expected, with gusts that could exceed 90 km/h, causing reduced visibility. The SMN urges people to avoid going out, secure objects that could be carried away by the wind, close doors and windows, and not take shelter under marquees, signs, trees, or poles. They also ask to take extreme precautions when driving.

Extreme cold is the most widespread phenomenon: it affects Salta, Jujuy, Formosa, Chaco, Corrientes, Misiones, Tucumán, Catamarca, Córdoba, La Rioja, San Luis, La Pampa, Mendoza, and northern Buenos Aires. In these areas, freezing temperatures «can be dangerous, especially for at-risk groups: children, people over 65, and those with chronic diseases.»

In the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), Thursday started cool, with a low of 6°C and a high that will not exceed 13°C. The sky will be mostly cloudy, although some sunny spells are expected. In the province of Buenos Aires, the low was also 6°C and the high will reach 14°C, with winds up to 22 km/h and gusts up to 50 km/h forecast for Friday morning.

The SMN also released extreme temperatures for the rest of the country. Catamarca will have between 3°C and 17°C; Chaco, between 3°C and 17°C; Chubut, between 2°C and 9°C; Córdoba, between -1°C and 16°C; Corrientes, between 3°C and 17°C; Entre Ríos, between 3°C and 14°C; Formosa, between 3°C and 17°C; Jujuy, between 0°C and 15°C; La Pampa, between -1°C and 11°C; La Rioja, between 3°C and 16°C; Mendoza, between 1°C and 13°C; Misiones, between 5°C and 16°C; Neuquén, between 0°C and 14°C; Río Negro, between 1°C and 9°C; Salta, between -2°C and 15°C; San Juan, between -1°C and 15°C; San Luis, between -1°C and 14°C; Santa Cruz, between -1°C and 4°C; Santa Fe, between -1°C and 14°C; Santiago del Estero, between 3°C and 19°C; Tierra del Fuego, between 2°C and 4°C; and Tucumán, between 5°C and 17°C.

The cold does not let up. While the country freezes, authorities insist on prevention. Winter should not be underestimated: this yellow alert is a call to take care, especially the most vulnerable. The question is whether we are prepared for what is coming.
