The earth trembled with fury in Venezuela. Two consecutive earthquakes, of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 according to the U.S. Geological Survey, devastated Caracas and surrounding cities such as La Guaira, where buildings and homes collapsed. The toll of victims and material damage is still uncertain, but initial reports are not encouraging.
As the Venezuelan people try to overcome the tragedy, the international community reacted swiftly. The Argentine government, through the Foreign Ministry and the President’s Office, published two messages on X offering humanitarian assistance. “The Argentine Republic is closely monitoring the evolution of the situation and expresses its willingness to collaborate with the humanitarian assistance that may be required, in coordination with the relevant international organizations,” reads one of the texts. It adds: “Javier Milei extends his hand in solidarity to the Venezuelan people in the face of a natural disaster that demands a reaction from the entire international community.”
From the United States, Donald Trump did not lag behind. “The two great earthquakes that have just struck the great people of Venezuela are of enormous magnitude and have left a devastating number of dead. The United States is ready, willing, and able to help!” he posted. He added: “I have instructed all agencies of our government to prepare to act quickly. We will be there for our new and great friends. The first reports are not good!”
In Brazil, President Lula Da Silva also joined in: “I learned, with great concern and dismay, of the impacts caused by the earthquake that struck Venezuela this Wednesday (24). I instructed the Foreign Ministry to assess, together with the Brazilian Embassy in Caracas, the situation in the country and the assistance measures that Brazil can adopt.”
The Argentine leader and the Brazilian president were joined by those of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele; Chile, Antonio Kast; and the elected Colombian president Abelardo de la Espriella, who also offered assistance to the government of Delcy Rodríguez. Later, the presidents of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa Azin; Panama, José Raúl Mulino; Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz Pereira; and Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, did the same.
On the other hand, María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia also expressed themselves on social media. “My heart, my infinite embrace, and my prayers are with every Venezuelan home in these hours of anguish. May strength, serenity, and solidarity prevail among us in this difficult moment,” wrote the Venezuelan leader.
The president of the government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, expressed his support for the Venezuelan people, while the Spanish Embassy in Venezuela issued a statement with recommendations for citizens. Later, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, expressed his condolences to Venezuela, especially “to the families who have lost their loved ones.” “Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the severe earthquakes. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and stand in solidarity with all those affected in this very difficult time,” he highlighted and added that his country is willing to provide “all possible assistance.”
Likewise, José Raúl Mulino, President of Panama, stated: “Our greatest solidarity and support to Venezuela for the earthquake and its consequences. Panama, once again, offers its humanitarian aid to brotherly countries.” Laura Fernández Delgado, the highest leader of Costa Rica, assured that her country “embraces with its heart the Venezuelan people in these hours of pain after the earthquakes” and affirmed: “Our solidarity is with every affected family and with those who today work to save lives and rebuild hope. You are not alone.”
Meanwhile, in Venezuela, desperation and pain mix with the hope that international aid will arrive soon. Aftershocks continue and fear does not cease. The international community has rallied, but the question everyone asks is: will it be enough?
