Amid the tech boom shaking the world, Netflix has just released a film that promises to revolutionize streaming. ‘Resistencia’, known internationally as ‘The Creator’, arrived on the platform days ago and is already positioned as one of the most-watched in Argentina. But what does this film have that drives subscribers crazy?
Directed by Gareth Edwards, the same filmmaker behind ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and ‘Godzilla’, the film transports us to the year 2070. In that apocalyptic future, humanity is immersed in a total war against artificial intelligence (AI). The conflict began when an AI created to protect humans failed and detonated a nuclear warhead in downtown Los Angeles. From then on, the West banned AI, while in a region called ‘New Asia’, humans and conscious robots coexist in peace.
The protagonist is Joshua, played by John David Washington (son of Denzel Washington). He is a former special forces member tormented by the disappearance of his pregnant wife. He is recruited for a definitive mission: cross enemy lines in New Asia to find and destroy the ‘Creator’, the secret architect of the AI that developed a weapon capable of extinguishing humanity.
When Joshua manages to infiltrate the secret lab and finds the weapon of mass destruction, he gets quite a surprise: the ‘weapon’ is an android in the form of a little girl, named Alphie, who can control technology remotely with her mind. From there, Joshua faces a fierce moral dilemma: he cannot kill her. He becomes her protector as they flee from human military forces determined to destroy her at all costs, forcing him to question who the real monsters are in this war.
The official synopsis describes: ‘A former special forces agent finds himself in command of a commando unit tasked with hunting down and killing the creator of an extraordinary artificial intelligence that has the ability to annihilate all of humanity.’ Reviews were not long in coming: on FilmAffinity they rate it as ‘a visually stunning work’ and ‘a great spectacle for the big screen.’ They also highlight that ‘it does not hide its dozens of references and allusions, as if wanting to validate all that cinema and add to it, protect it, and preserve it in a story that is a road movie in a turbulent universe where love is the key.’
With a million-dollar budget and top-notch visual effects, ‘Resistencia’ is shaping up to be the new obsession for sci-fi lovers. If you haven’t seen it yet, get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions and unrestrained action. Netflix has it, and it’s already a phenomenon.
