Urban and suburban transport in the interior of the country is on the verge of collapse. Bus companies, grouped under the Argentine Federation of Passenger Automobile Transporters (Fatap), have issued a warning that shakes the board: they could cut services and even suspend key payments such as salary advances and half of the Christmas bonus.
This Monday, companies must pay the usual salary advance, and on June 30, half of the Christmas bonus. However, Fatap assures that many are at their limit. «There are companies that simply cannot afford to pay the half Christmas bonus, and others that can only do so in installments,» they stated in a statement that sets off alarms throughout the interior.
The crisis, they claim, is not new but has worsened in recent months. Since Javier Milei’s government eliminated the Transport Fund in February 2024, after 18 years in effect, provinces and municipalities were left alone to assist companies. But that help is not arriving as it should. «In addition to rising costs – fuel, wages, inputs – and outdated fares, there is now the lack of payment of funds and compensations by the National State and provincial governments,» the federation denounces.
Fuel, which had jumped when oil rose internationally, now that it is falling, is not being passed on to local prices. «YPF asks us to wait because they have frozen prices for a while, but meanwhile the dollar is stable and increases are in pesos,» explained a businessman in the sector. A bus body that cost 92,000 dollars rose to 95,000 in one year.
The labor impact is devastating. According to Fatap, between 2024 and 2026, between 9,000 and 11,000 jobs linked to passenger road transport in the interior were lost. Fleet renewal is paralyzed, and older units are being stretched to the maximum, resulting in poorer service quality. «Today it is not possible to cover operating costs in the sector,» they state.
Meanwhile, the Tramways Automobile Union (UTA) is pushing for a call for collective bargaining so that the wage increase impacts the next settlement. Today, the base salary for short and medium-distance drivers in the AMBA is 1,425,500 pesos, and with additional benefits, it is around 2 million pesos per month.
But the problem is not just wages. Fatap denounces «breaches» in the payment of compensations and programs aimed at subsidizing tickets for retirees, housewives, Progresar scholarship recipients, and Malvinas veterans. These are resources that should be transferred by the Nation and provinces, but interior companies end up absorbing out of their own pockets to sustain the discounts and benefits defined by public policies.
«So far in 2026, the Nation and several provinces have accumulated arrears and debts with interior transport that companies can no longer absorb. Defending public transport is defending the right of millions of Argentines to study, work, produce, and develop their life project,» the federation states.
A clear example is seen in the city of Córdoba. The municipality pays 4,782 pesos per kilometer, but the real cost for companies is 5,366 pesos. The system covers about four million kilometers per month, representing about 19,000 million pesos. Of that total, between 30% and 35% should be contributed by the municipal administration, but the gap is constant.
«The idea is not to harm users, but we have reached a limit situation, and we need the problem to be addressed comprehensively and urgently. It cannot continue like this; the transport crisis in the interior is getting worse,» warns Fatap.
Without a quick solution, the country is heading toward a cancellation of services in the interior with a direct impact on daily mobility, employment, and social cohesion in Argentina’s main cities and regions. The clock is ticking, and the ticket is once again at the center of the storm.
