Milei Returns to Spain: Sixth Visit Without Contact with Sánchez, Pure Show and Medal

The president travels to Madrid to give a talk at a private university, receive a medal, and meet with investors. No trace of a meeting with Pedro Sánchez's government, with whom relations remain frozen after the scandal over his remarks about the Spanish leader's wife.

Milei vuelve a España: sexta visita sin contacto con Sánchez, puro show y medalla

Next Wednesday, Javier Milei will board a plane to Spain again. Yes, you read that right: it is the Argentine president’s sixth trip to Iberian soil since taking office. But don’t get your hopes up: there will be no photo with Pedro Sánchez or anything like that. The president is going to give a talk at a private university, receive an award, and speak with business leaders. Period. The socialist government is once again off the radar.

The delegation is led by Milei himself, accompanied by his sister and Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei. In Madrid, they will be joined by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, who arrives from Panama and New York. Ambassador Wenceslao Bunge is in charge of drawing up the guest list for the meeting with investors. Trade between Argentina and Spain is moderate and favorable to Argentina: about $1.4 billion in exports versus $1 billion in imports.

On Friday the 26th at 10 a.m., Milei will give an economics lecture at the Center for European Studies (CEU) San Pablo. The venue is no coincidence: that is where academic Javier Morillas Gómez works, a liberal who organizes courses at El Escorial and will present the president with a medal of honor. Morillas is a counselor of the Spanish Court of Auditors and wrote a book claiming Spanish sovereignty over the Sahara, which Milei has in his library. He is also very close to Alejandro Nimo, a former councilman of Avellaneda and now investment attaché at the embassy, who describes himself as Menemist, Mileist, and anarcho-capitalist. Nimo has a tense relationship with Ambassador Bunge, whom he denounced in April for having removed him from the office at the diplomatic headquarters where he met with businesspeople. On Monday he will be in Buenos Aires presenting his book and accompanied by Spanish investors.

Milei’s last visit to Spain was in March, when he closed the Madrid Economic Forum and met with Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox. On that occasion, the president let slip that he would not be surprised if Vice President Victoria Villarruel had tried to sabotage the trip. In none of his previous visits was there any contact with Spanish authorities. The Spanish embassy in Buenos Aires declined to comment. No one forgets the scandal in May 2024, when Milei called Sánchez’s wife, Begonia, a «corrupt woman» at a Vox forum. The Spanish government recalled its ambassador for consultations and demanded an apology from the president. Tensions eased, but relations remain cold. The new ambassador, Joaquín María de Arístegui Laborde, took office in November, and both leaders have toned down their rhetoric, but the geopolitical differences are enormous: Milei aligned with Trump and Israel, Sánchez a defender of the Palestinian cause.

«Relations are good,» Spanish Minister Ángel Víctor Torres said a month ago, although he acknowledged that visits like that of the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, do not help. But the reality is that Milei returns to Spain without seeking a gesture of rapprochement. Pure show, zero diplomacy. On Saturday the 27th he will be back in Buenos Aires, leaving behind an agenda that, once again, sidesteps the socialist government.
