National deputy for the PTS in FITU, Nicolás del Caño, came out swinging against the government after the announcement by Economy Minister Luis Caputo regarding the potential construction of a nuclear reactor by the US firm Meitner Energy Latam. According to Del Caño, this is a total giveaway that involves halting the national CAREM project, which is already at an advanced stage and in which millions of dollars have been invested, to hand the business over to a foreign company.
«They halted CAREM, which is at an advanced stage and in which millions of dollars have been invested, to hand over to a US-owned company the construction of a nuclear reactor that exists only on paper,» Del Caño fired on his social media. And he added: «Will they also give it the benefits of the SUPER RIGI? They fire and persecute workers in the Argentine nuclear sector to guarantee business for Caputo’s vulture friends.»
The statements come amid the systematic attack on the nuclear sector in recent months. A few days ago, more than 60 workers from the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) were laid off. At Atucha, where the CAREM reactor is being developed, six layoffs have already been confirmed. Additionally, there is an ongoing attempt to fire Mariano Saleh, a delegate and technician at the Atucha II nuclear power plant, who has been persecuted by Nucleoeléctrica’s management for denouncing the emptying of the sector, outsourcing, and rejection of the partial privatization plan for the company.
Meanwhile, Caputo celebrated Meitner Energy’s announcement, highlighting the investment amount and the supposed number of jobs it would generate. However, Del Caño denounces that the government is dismantling the Argentine nuclear sector to favor foreign companies, in a context of adjustment and persecution of workers.
«Total giveaway. They halted CAREM, which is at an advanced stage and in which millions of dollars have been invested, to hand over to a US-owned company the construction of a nuclear reactor that exists only on paper,» the deputy insisted, also questioning whether the project will receive benefits from the Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI).
Del Caño’s denunciation once again highlights the government’s policy of prioritizing the interests of large foreign capital over national development and workers’ rights. While multi-million dollar investments are announced for US companies, nuclear sector workers are fired and persecuted for defending their jobs and the country’s energy sovereignty.
