Buenos Aires City Chief of Government Jorge Macri signed a decree limiting the right to strike in essential services such as passenger transport and waste collection. The measure, which adheres to the National Labor Modernization Law, requires guaranteeing between 50% and 75% of operations during strikes. The Left Front described the decision as «another smoke screen to cover up the worst management in the City.»
«It covers up the filth, we travel like cattle with exorbitant fares, and Macri limits the right to strike to defend the privileges and profits of the caste of his business friends,» denounced Andrea D’Atri, a PTS legislator in the FITU. The leader criticized the city government for prioritizing corporate interests over labor rights and service quality.
The reality on Buenos Aires streets is critical: overflowing containers, a smell of urine downtown, and a waste collection service collapsing without a single worker strike. «It’s the terrible business service and Macri’s management, which only benefits his friends,» D’Atri emphasized. On the subway, passengers travel «like cattle,» with dirty cars, poor maintenance, and contamination with asbestos, a carcinogenic material that has already claimed lives. The fare, among the most expensive on the continent, continues to rise month after month above inflation, while the Roggio group – the service concessionaire – accumulates millions in profits.
Claudio Dellecarbonara, from the Subway and Premetro Workers’ Union Association (AGTSyP), was blunt: «Blackmailer Jorge Macri guarantees shady deals for Emova, which poisons with asbestos and charges unaffordable fares.» The leader denounced that the company pursues workers with compulsory salary deductions and legal cases, while the city government does not penalize companies for poor service.
The decree comes amid a criminal case brought by Macri and Emova against 200 workers for «illicit association,» in response to strike actions in 2024 and 2025. The workers, who resist by opening turnstiles without harming passengers, demand action on the presence of asbestos in stations and cars. «We signed a decree so that never again can an organized minority paralyze an entire City,» Macri blustered, while the majority of Buenos Aires residents suffer from a lack of quality services.
The opposition warns that this measure is a new anti-union advance that only seeks to divert attention from the crisis in the City. «Macri imitates Milei to avoid losing votes in the internal right-wing dispute, while they negotiate candidates for 2027,» D’Atri concluded.
