The 2026 World Cup is not only played on the pitches. It is also fought on the cell phones of millions of Argentines, where a silent battle is leaving victims. While the national team seeks to take home the cup, online betting houses deploy an arsenal to trap the youngest. And the numbers are chilling.
According to consulting firm H2 Gambling Capital, this World Cup will move 60 billion dollars in regulated bets, 71% more than in Qatar 2022 and 185% more than in Russia 2018. But those figures only reflect the legal business. The real monster lies in illegal betting and in the way platforms are designed to hook kids.
The strongest controversy was sparked by BetWarrior, which used artificial intelligence to recreate a digital Maradona who looks into the camera and says: “If the world wants to cut our legs off, here we play with balls.” A message that legitimizes betting as an act of bravery. Social media exploded with outrage and parodies, but the damage is already done: the image of the popular idol is used to promote an addiction.
But it’s not just that. Companies bought advertising space during cooling breaks, those hydration pauses that interrupt the game. Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk said it clearly: “I don’t like going to commercials in the middle of the game.” What seems like a pause to care for players is, in reality, a golden window for betting to sneak into viewers’ minds.
And then there are micro-bets: betting in real time on whether a corner, yellow card, or penalty will occur. Artificially high maxi-odds are the bait for the impulsive. Mercado Pago also joined in with a “Fixture 2026” that offered prizes of up to 20 million pesos and allowed creating tournaments with friends with a pooled jackpot. The Association of State Lotteries, Quinielas and Casinos (ALEA) warned it could violate the Penal Code. The company backtracked and eliminated cash, but left the “Por los Porotos” (For the Beans) mode.
The result is an ecosystem that pursues the viewer 24 hours a day. And the victims are the youngest. According to Unicef and Unesco, 24% of Argentine adolescents aged 12 to 17 have already bet online. 86% did so for the promise of quick money. The economic crisis, lack of opportunities, and influencers flaunting easy earnings create the perfect breeding ground.
What starts as a game ends in hell: 69% suffer anxiety, 49% see their school performance affected, and 12% end up in debt, stealing, or asking family for money. 79% recognize the risk of addiction but cannot stop. Teachers report that kids bet during classes and recess. Recess, once a space for socializing, is now isolation in front of a screen. There are children with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. And in illegal betting, strangers pressure families for payments.
Public figures have a huge responsibility. Footballers, like Dibu Martínez, advertise these platforms and normalize consumption among the most vulnerable. By validating the business with their influence, they prioritize the commercial contract over the ethical duty to protect children.
The consequences will not fade when the World Cup ends. What will remain is the mental health of an affected generation, indebted families, and isolated kids who used to get together to play football and now stare at their cell phones. Football, which should have been a refuge, has become the gateway to an addiction that destroys lives.
