Andy Biggs Sweeps Arizona Primary, Prepares to Face Katie Hobbs

This July 21, Arizona experienced an election day that could change the state’s political course. The Republican primary for governor had an undisputed winner: Congressman Andy Biggs, who took 73.4% of the vote, according to official results from the Associated Press. His main rival, David Schweikert, barely reached 14.7%.

Biggs, 67, was born in Tucson and has served five terms in the House of Representatives. His political career includes 14 years in the state legislature, where he was Senate president. Now, with the explicit endorsement of President Donald Trump, he prepares to face current Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs in the general election on November 3.

“It is a great honor for me to endorse the highly respected Congressman Andy Biggs, a defender of America’s interests, who is running to be the next governor of the wonderful state of Arizona,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account. He added: “Andy has served his community with a career full of accolades. As your next governor, he will work to cut taxes and regulations, promote American-made products, keep our border secure, stop illegal immigrants, and protect our Second Amendment, which is always under threat.”

Polls had already anticipated Biggs’s victory. A Nextgen Polling survey conducted July 8-9 gave him 66.1% support among Republican voters, while Schweikert had 10.4%. Another study by Noble Predictive Insights confirmed the trend, with 60% approval for the Trump-backed candidate.

Schweikert, 64, born in Los Angeles, is known as the “budget hawk” for his focus on reducing federal spending. He announced his candidacy in September 2025 with four pillars: economic freedom, border security, election integrity, and defense of the Second Amendment. However, he failed to capitalize on his eight-term experience in Congress.

Election day also included primaries for other key offices, such as secretary of state and attorney general. As of July 20, the Arizona Secretary of State’s office had received 852,369 early ballots, mostly by mail.

Biggs, who in 2019 was included by the Arizona Republic in the list of “10 people in Arizona to watch,” announced his candidacy in January 2025 with the promise of turning the state into the “Florida of the West.” His proposals include tax cuts, protecting the southern border, and ensuring the integrity of state elections.

“Voters have an important decision in the primary. I am the only candidate in the Republican primary for governor with a proven record of defeating Democrats in tough races. And with your support, that is what I will do in the general election,” Biggs said in a statement.

With 93% of the votes counted as of Thursday, July 23, the trend is irreversible. Biggs will be the Republican candidate and will face Katie Hobbs, who is seeking a second term. The question is: can Trumpism wrest Arizona from the Democrats?
