The Car Part Almost Nobody Knows About, But Fixing It Costs More Than the Engine

The catalytic converter, that component that goes unnoticed under the chassis, hides a repair cost that can exceed that of a used engine. Made with precious metals, its failure is often the result of other ignored mechanical problems.

The catalytic converter is a part that remains underneath the car and most drivers pay no attention to it, but its replacement can become one of the most expensive repairs on the vehicle. In some cases, it can even cost more than a used or reconditioned engine due to the value of the materials it is made of.

The function of the catalytic converter is to reduce polluting emissions before the gases exit through the exhaust pipe. To achieve this, its interior has a structure with thousands of small channels coated with precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium, capable of accelerating chemical reactions that transform harmful gases into less polluting ones.

Precisely, the high value of these metals explains a large part of its cost. Added to that is the fact that each catalytic converter is designed for a specific engine, must meet strict emission standards, and, in many modern vehicles, is part of an assembly that integrates sensors and other components of the exhaust system. In some models, there are even two or more catalytic converters, which further increases the cost of a potential repair.

Unlike other components subject to wear, the catalytic converter is not part of the vehicle’s periodic maintenance and, if the engine runs correctly, it can last practically its entire useful life. When it fails prematurely, the problem almost always originated in another engine component.

One of the most frequent causes is unburned fuel reaching the exhaust system. This can occur due to a misfire caused by worn spark plugs, defective ignition coils, or an incorrect fuel mixture. When burned inside the catalytic converter, that fuel raises the temperature to the point of damaging or even melting its internal structure.

It can also deteriorate due to oil or coolant entering the combustion chamber, situations that end up contaminating the catalytic material and reducing its ability to treat exhaust gases. In addition to these mechanical causes, physical damage can occur. Because it is located underneath the vehicle, a hit against a speed bump, a rock, or a curb can break the ceramic core inside.

The best way to care for the catalytic converter is to keep the engine in good condition. Specialists recommend never ignoring the «check engine» light, especially when it flashes, as it usually indicates a misfire that can end up damaging the catalytic converter if the vehicle continues to be driven.

At the same time, it is important to respect maintenance intervals, replace spark plugs and filters when necessary, use the fuel recommended by the manufacturer, and quickly address any abnormal oil consumption or coolant loss.

Another fundamental aspect is to avoid replacing the catalytic converter without having found the origin of the problem. If the cause that led to the failure persists, the new part can be damaged again in a short time.

When the catalytic converter begins to deteriorate, some symptoms usually appear that warrant a mechanical inspection. Among the most frequent are a loss of power, increased fuel consumption, difficulty accelerating, metallic noises coming from the exhaust system, or the engine malfunction light turning on.

However, these symptoms are not exclusive to the catalytic converter and may be related to other failures. Therefore, before deciding to replace it, specialists recommend performing a complete diagnosis of the engine and exhaust system to confirm the origin of the problem.

Si supieran manejar no romperían nada. Viva la libertad carajo!
