The corpse of financier Jeffrey Epstein, found hanging in a Manhattan jail cell on August 10, 2019, continues to stir controversy. The suicide of the sex offender — sentenced in 2008 for prostitution and charged in 2019 with minor sex trafficking — sparked a wave of conspiracy theories that now divides President Donald Trump’s base.
Epstein, a former math teacher turned financial magnate, rubbed shoulders with the world’s elite: from Bill Clinton to Prince Andrew, as well as Bill Gates and Trump himself. The pilot of Epstein’s private jet, Lawrence Visoski, testified that Trump flew on that plane several times. Trump denied it, but the detail was recorded in the trial against Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s partner convicted of sex trafficking.
The case exploded in 2019 when the Department of Justice accused Epstein of exploiting and sexually abusing dozens of girls between 2002 and 2005. Epstein pleaded not guilty but never stood trial: he killed himself in his cell. The official autopsy ruled it a hanging, but the financier’s ties to powerful figures fueled suspicions that someone had him silenced.
Trump, during the 2024 campaign, said he would declassify Epstein’s files if he won. Once in power, his administration promised to do so, but in July 2025 a Department of Justice memo concluded that Epstein killed himself and that there was no incriminating client list or evidence of blackmail. The response from Trump’s most loyal followers was furious.
Talk show hosts and conservative podcasters stirred the MAGA base, demanding more documents. The pressure became unbearable for Trump, who defended himself on Truth Social: he accused his own followers of falling for a hoax, called them «weak,» and said they were helping Democrats. The rift was exposed.
To contain the fire, on July 17 Trump asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to request a federal judge to release the 2019 grand jury transcripts. The government filed the motion on Friday. Now the ball is in the judge’s court, who will decide whether to make them public, though part of the material is likely to be censored for privacy or security reasons.
Meanwhile, the controversy continues to grow. The MAGA base, which for years fueled theories about a supposed murder of Epstein to protect the powerful, now faces its own leader. Will the files be opened? Or will it all remain a new chapter in the noir novel surrounding the White House?
