Adorni Withdraws from Senate: LLA Goes All In to Avoid Embarrassment

Adorni se borra del Senado: LLA apuesta todo para evitar un papelón

The government panicked. This afternoon, sources from the Bullrich faction confirmed that Manuel Adorni had scrapped the management report he himself had scheduled for July 2 in the Senate. Hours later, the official went on X to say he was ready to go, but the move was already made: the decision was taken at a meeting in Casa Rosada with ruling party senators, and it was Patricia Bullrich, Karina Milei, and the Secretary of Strategic Affairs, Ignacio Devitt, who sealed the pact to suspend the appointment.

The play is clear: avoid by all means that Adorni gives explanations. Last week, all blocs had unanimously agreed that this Thursday the future of the Chief of Staff would be defined, with the possibility of interpellating him on July 2. But now, the ruling party appeals to a loophole in the regulations to stretch the timeline. «They received instructions from the President. He says he needs more time for Adorni,» they say in the Senate hallways.

In Peronism, they are not silent: «We are going for the interpellation, motion of censure, and removal from office.» And they add: «We already gave time when we decided to postpone the session for a week.» They directly target radicalism and federal Peronists for changing their position. José Mayans, head of the Justicialist bloc, was absent from today’s Parliamentary Labor meeting as a sign of repudiation.

The PRO also withdrew: Martín Goerling Lara did not show up. In LLA they say they support the ruling party’s position, but the opposition assures they will not give validity to this modification. The concrete fact is that this Thursday’s session will deal with judicial appointments and the private property bill. To introduce the Adorni issue on the agenda, two-thirds are needed, an almost impossible number to reach.

«Article 101 of the Constitution is clear: removal of the Chief of Staff requires an absolute majority of 37 members. Last week they all agreed, now they received calls and changed their minds,» they argue from the ruling party. But the opposition counterattacks: «No part of the Constitution says that about 2/3. They received the order to cover for Adorni. They are giving their lives for a person who lies and makes malicious omission in his sworn declaration.»

The crypto official is safe for now. With the absentees, the remaining blocs decided to send the issue to the Constitutional Affairs Committee. «We interpret from precedents that it must have a ruling,» they ratified in the ruling party. But Peronism has already anticipated that Thursday at 11 will be a pitched battle. The only certainty is that senators will be in their seats.
