Macri y Caputo: el cónclave secreto que selló el veto universitario

In the shadows of power, while the public agenda was ablaze with debate over the veto of the University Funding Law, a key meeting was brewing behind everyone’s backs. In early October 2025, former President Mauricio Macri and Santiago Caputo, Javier Milei’s closest advisor, sat at the same table to smooth over differences. The meeting, which took place on Thursday, October 3, was an attempt to close the rift between two sectors that, until recently, were eyeing each other warily.

The conclave was held in Caputo’s office, far from the spotlight of the Casa Rosada. According to sources, the meeting lasted several hours and served to unblock a relationship that seemed on the verge of collapse. Days earlier, Macri had made a statement that set off all alarms: «Why would I go eat milanesas (with Milei) if nothing is fulfilled afterward?» The declaration, laden with political venom, forced Milei to make his move. And the move he made was Santiago Caputo, «Pibe» Caputo, nephew of Economy Minister Luis Caputo and one of the most feared operators in the ruling party.

At the meeting, Macri and Caputo tried to reach an agreement to strengthen Milei’s stance on the veto of the University Funding Law, which was to be debated in the Chamber of Deputies the following Wednesday. But that was not the only topic on the table. According to sources, Macri requested the incorporation of Guillermo Dietrich into the libertarian government. Dietrich, an automotive industry businessman who served as Minister of Transportation during Macri’s administration (2015-2019), would be the piece the former president wants to place on Milei’s board to guarantee his influence.

The meeting, which came to light days later, revealed that the relationship between Macri and Milei is anything but straightforward. While the ruling party needs PRO votes to sustain its vetoes, Macri demands concrete gestures. The meeting with Caputo was, in effect, an armed truce. The veto of the University Funding Law is just the tip of the iceberg. Behind it, an uncomfortable alliance is brewing that promises to give the opposition more than a few headaches.

The question hanging in the air is: how far is Milei willing to go to keep Macri happy? The incorporation of Dietrich would be a nod, but also a sign that the former president is still pulling the strings of power, even from the shadows. Time will tell whether this truce is just a mirage or the beginning of a new stage in Argentine politics.
