Mery del Cerro opened her heart like never before. In a heartbreaking interview on Otro día perdido (eltrece), the actress tearfully recounted the ordeal she went through last year: she suffered a miscarriage and, just two weeks later, doctors detected a tumor that led to emergency surgery.
The story begins just before Mery moved to Montevideo to film Margarita, the Cris Morena series for HBO Max. «Last year we lost a pregnancy with Meme,» she confessed about her partner, DJ Jaime Bouquet. It was all a shock: she found out she was pregnant a month before traveling, but four days before leaving she learned the pregnancy had not progressed. «It had never happened to me. Each person processes it as they can. Four days before finding out about this, with everything it entails, not only emotionally but physically, the loss of a pregnancy is very hard,» she said.
She decided not to tell anyone on set. Only Isabel Macedo, her castmate, was her support. «We filmed a lot together and I needed to have someone who knew what was happening.»
But the hell didn’t end there. Two weeks after finishing filming and returning to Buenos Aires, she began to feel severe stomach pains. She thought it was gastritis or Covid. The ultrasound gave her the news: «You have a seven-centimeter formation in your abdomen.» After ruling out an ectopic pregnancy, doctors admitted her and diagnosed a hypervascularized tumor. «The next day I went into surgery. Meme was white as a sheet. My parents didn’t know, nobody knew. It was very hard for me because it happened suddenly. I had never had surgery,» she recounted.
The operation was successful: they removed the encapsulated tumor. But then came 40 days of anxiety waiting for the biopsy results. Doctors at the Hospital Italiano were blunt: «Your case is extremely rare, rarer than a green dog. We sent your sample to the oncology team at Hospital Italiano and no one has ever seen anything like it. Your case is one for study.» They even plan to present it at conferences.
In the midst of it all, the offer came to play a mother in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. «I couldn’t believe that came to me at that moment. What was happening to me was so profound, with this mother who moves forward, who teaches her son to never give up on his dreams and to keep going. The truth is, it’s tears of happiness because life gave me another chance in something where we didn’t know what would happen,» she said through tears.
