Javier Milei today finally stripped Manuel Adorni of the most important function he held in the government and for which he was brought in: communication. Thus, he emptied him of power. And at the same time, he shielded him in the Chamber of Deputies to prevent Congress from ejecting him from his post as Cabinet chief.
The President’s plan began on Friday during a six-hour breakfast at the Olivos residence between him and Adorni. There they began to take the first steps. It was announced that there would be a new spokesperson, the previous position held by the minister and from which he no longer performed his duties for several reasons: the first and most important is the impossibility of explaining his legal situation to the press.
Adorni perfectly fulfilled that maxim that «it is impossible to be one’s own spokesperson.» That is why Milei, faced with the opposition’s demand to fire him, began to comply halfway. The Pampean deputy Adrián Ravier, an economist with a very good relationship with Milei over the past two years, stepped into that role.
This Monday, Milei took the second step and fired the early Adorni loyalist Javier Lanari, as anticipated last Friday. He ceased to be Secretary of Communication. He was Adorni’s No. 2. The now former official was exhausted, had wanted to leave his post for a few months, and according to government sources, «he had a tough time with Adorni’s situation.»
In the Casa Rosada, there are two orbits that complement each other but belong to different compartments: one is the Spokesperson’s Office and the other is the Communication Secretariat. The previous government, that of the Frente de Todos, kept them well separated. With Milei, Adorni took all the power and merged them. But now it will return to its old ways. Separate matters.
For this last position, Milei appointed Fabián Fernández this Monday. «He is a professional who comes to work and reorient communication in the face of new challenges. He has experience and did a great job at YPF,» highlighted sources at the Casa Rosada.
For now, Adorni remains in office. There are rumors that this week there could be news about his situation at the Casa Rosada, and changes and new names for that position are already being discussed. We’ll have to see to believe.
Meanwhile, the President ordered him shielded in Congress. Milei does not want Parliament to oust him. If he is going to make a decision, it will be entirely up to the president.
The government is confident that «there is no way it will pass the Chamber of Deputies.» In the Senate, the situation also became complicated. The opposition needs two-thirds. And while there may be surprises in the Upper House, in the Lower House «it’s impossible,» they reflect at the Casa Rosada. «They can’t even get a quorum in the Chamber of Deputies,» boasted a libertarian who knows the halls of Congress by heart. The ruling party called a committee meeting for next week.
«We are working to ensure it does not succeed,» they stated in LLA. «The session requested by the opposition in the Chamber of Deputies is to summon the committee and discuss the project. So we said: ‘Okay, you want to discuss the Adorni issue?’ We called the committee and let it be discussed like any project,» emphasized a Milei supporter.
It will then be on Tuesday, June 30, starting at 3:00 PM, with the idea of achieving the interpellation and then the motion of censure against Milei’s Cabinet chief. There are six resolution projects.
From the Senate, they complained that they had agreed that an absolute majority (half plus one) was needed to remove Adorni, and now the ruling party ordered that the vote to remove him requires two-thirds of the votes. «You have to admit that not even Stalin wielded power like Karina,» they responded on this matter from the Upper House.
In LLA, they responded to José Mayans, the Peronist senator who promoted that reading of Article 101 of the Constitution. «That was his own pressure,» the libertarians stated. «What Karina ordered him is: ‘Go, interpret the Constitution as you like and save Adorni because he is our partner,'» Mayans said last Sunday.
This Wednesday, there will be movements in the Senate regarding Adorni’s situation. «They are doing everything to overturn Tuesday’s session. We’ll see if we have the votes,» say opposition sources. In parallel, the Cabinet chief could achieve a meeting tomorrow at the Casa Rosada with violet senators so that they go to support him in the Upper House with their arguments.
