The euphoria over the return of the Argentine national team has the entire country on edge, but behind the popular fervor, a political tug-of-war is brewing that promises to be as intense as the final match. While the players decide their fate on the field against Spain, national, city, and Buenos Aires province authorities are racing against the clock to negotiate how the team will be received. The proposal that has gained strength in recent hours is clear: for the players to land at Ezeiza and be transported by helicopter to the heliport of Casa Rosada. From there, two options: the presidential balcony or a bus to take them to the Obelisco.
The Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, is coordinating the operation from the government, while Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva works in tandem with her Buenos Aires city counterpart, Horacio Giménez. The original plan calls for the Aerolíneas Argentinas charter flight, already requested by the AFA, to depart at 1 a.m. from New York and land at Ezeiza between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday. Space has already been reserved in Hangar 5 of the airport for a press pen, but the real dilemma lies in downtown Buenos Aires.
The Casa Rosada option is considered the safest by authorities, as it would allow the players to greet from the balcony for as long as they wish and quickly leave via the heliport. However, sources close to the squad see little chance of this: the players have their families and friends in the United States, and any delay could complicate plans. Additionally, the image of the champions on the Rosada balcony would contrast sharply with 2022, when they were received at the Obelisco. The government is trying to depoliticize the event, but the photo speaks for itself.
On the other hand, the Obelisco option involves setting up a stage on the avenue and transporting the players by bus along Rivadavia and Diagonal Norte. The Buenos Aires city government has already confirmed it will deploy a thousand City Police officers for the Sunday of the final, along with barriers, street closures, a mobile medical post, and SAME ambulances. The administration of Jorge Macri will monitor in real time from the Urban Monitoring Center, using drones and helicopters from the Air Squadron.
Meanwhile, the AFA, led by Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia, has the final say. The final decision will only be known when the 2026 World Cup ends, but bets are already placed. Balcony or popular stage? The tug-of-war between the government and the players promises to be the underlying match of this final.
