Iván Cepeda no acepta derrota y anuncia impugnación masiva de 33.000 mesas en Colombia

Political tension in Colombia erupted this Sunday after left-wing candidate Iván Cepeda rejected the preliminary result of the presidential runoff and announced a massive challenge of 33,000 polling stations nationwide. The decision, which could prolong electoral uncertainty, was described by his opponents as a desperate attempt to reverse a defeat that seems inevitable.

“We recognize the preliminary count as data that is not yet official or binding. We acknowledge its initial result, but we must inform that our group of witnesses is proceeding to challenge 33,000 polling stations across the country,” Cepeda told his supporters, visibly tense. The statements came after the preliminary count showed a clear lead for Abelardo de la Espriella, the center-right candidate who is emerging as Colombia’s next president.

The scale of the announced challenges is extraordinary: 33,000 polling stations represent a record number that could affect a significant portion of the national tally. Electoral analysts warn that the review process could extend for days, fueling the uncertainty and polarization that already dominated the campaign.

From De la Espriella’s camp, the reaction was immediate. Several leaders interpreted the decision as an attempt to question the popular will expressed at the polls. “Colombian democracy cannot be held hostage by political whims. Any claim must be based on concrete evidence, not speculation,” said a spokesperson for the candidate. De la Espriella’s allies demand that the result be respected and that the challenges be analyzed swiftly and transparently.

Meanwhile, sectors close to Cepeda defend the measure as a legal mechanism provided for by Colombian electoral law. “We are exercising our right to guarantee the transparency of the process. It is not about rejecting democracy, but about ensuring that every vote counts,” they argued. However, the lack of concrete evidence of widespread irregularities raises doubts about the true intention behind the move.

Polarization in Colombia reached extreme levels during the campaign, with a country divided between those who support the continuity of the political project associated with petrismo and those who back the change of direction proposed by De la Espriella. Cepeda’s announcement threatens to extend that division beyond the polls, in a scenario of high post-electoral tension.

As official counts proceed, electoral authorities will have to analyze each of the claims submitted and determine which meet legal requirements. The process could take several days, depending on the volume of appeals filed. What is clear is that Cepeda’s statement makes it evident that the political dispute will not end with the closing of the polls. With thousands of challenged polling stations and an extremely polarized election, Colombia is heading toward a period of high tension as it awaits the final confirmation of the presidential result.
