Alerta naranja y amarilla: frío extremo, vientos y Zonda azotan 21 provincias este sábado

This Saturday, July 4, Argentina is freezing under a terrifying climatic combo. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has raised all alarms with orange and yellow alerts for extreme cold, intense winds, Zonda, and snowfall affecting 21 provinces. The official agency warns that temperatures could have a «moderate to high effect on health,» especially for at-risk groups.

The orange alert, the most severe, is in effect for eastern Buenos Aires province and southern Córdoba. There, the cold gives no respite, and the SMN recommends avoiding prolonged exposure, wearing layers of clothing, keeping environments safely heated, and avoiding sudden temperature changes. For the rest of the country, a yellow alert is in effect: from Buenos Aires City to Tierra del Fuego, including Mendoza, San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca, Tucumán, Salta, Jujuy, Chaco, Formosa, Misiones, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero, San Luis, La Pampa, Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, and Santa Cruz. In all these districts, temperatures can be dangerous, especially for children, people over 65, and those with chronic diseases.

But the cold is not the only concern. The SMN also issued a yellow alert for winds in western Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca, Tucumán, La Rioja, San Juan, and northwestern Mendoza. In the high mountain range, northwest winds will blow between 60 and 80 km/h, with gusts that could reach 120 km/h. This can reduce visibility and overturn trucks, so it is recommended not to go out, secure loose objects, and stay away from trees, poles, and signs.

The dreaded Zonda wind also makes an appearance. It will affect northern Mendoza, central San Juan, central Catamarca, northwestern Tucumán, central Salta, and part of Jujuy. With speeds of 30 to 45 km/h and gusts exceeding 60 km/h, the Zonda will bring a sudden rise in temperature and very low humidity, which can cause discomfort and respiratory problems.

Additionally, there is a yellow alert for snowfall in western Mendoza, where accumulations of 5 to 15 centimeters are expected, which could be exceeded locally. The SMN recommends not traveling unless strictly necessary, and if driving, only with vehicles prepared for ice and snow, with an emergency kit on hand.

In Buenos Aires City, the thermometer will range between 0°C and 11°C. The morning will start with a slightly cloudy sky, at noon there will be fog, the afternoon will be partly cloudy, and the night mostly cloudy, with winds up to 22 km/h. Sunday is expected to have isolated showers with a 70% chance of precipitation.

In Buenos Aires province, the low will be -3°C and the high 11°C. There will also be fog during the morning and noon, and rain will arrive on Sunday. The rest of the country is not spared: in La Pampa and San Juan, -3°C is expected; in Córdoba, -2°C; in Tierra del Fuego, -2°C; in San Luis, -1°C; in Mendoza, -1°C; and in Río Negro, 0°C. The highest highs will be in Formosa with 16°C, Chaco and Corrientes with 15°C, and Misiones with 15°C.

The SMN insists: extreme care must be taken, do not underestimate the cold or the winds, and stay informed. This Saturday, Argentina is split in half between ice and the Zonda.
