In the midst of the tragedy shaking Venezuela, a ray of hope emerges from the rubble. A baby was rescued alive this weekend after spending three days buried under the ruins of a building collapsed by the two earthquakes that struck the country on June 24. The moving moment was captured in a video that went viral on social media, showing the little one wrapped in a blanket while crying inconsolably.
The U.S. Embassy in Venezuela released the images with a hopeful message: «Against all odds, hope endures. U.S. search and rescue teams saved a baby from the rubble after the earthquakes in Venezuela. Every life saved is a victory.» The video shows the meticulous work of the rescuers, who managed to extract the baby safe and sound.
This rescue joins others that have moved the world, such as that of an 11-year-old boy found practically unharmed among the remains of a building, and that of a mother with her child, images that spread like wildfire on social media and brought a message of hope amid the chaos. «My God, protect that baby, may they reunite him with his family,» «Thank you for everything you are doing for Venezuela,» «How great you are, God,» and «Glory to God,» were some of the comments from users grateful for the work of the rescuers.
According to the UN World Disaster Alert and Coordination System, about 21 international search and rescue groups arrived in the South American country to provide immediate assistance. In addition to the United States, Argentina also sent aid, and teams from Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Qatar, the Czech Republic, Jordan, the United Kingdom, Spain, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, Turkey, Italy, and Lithuania were reported.
So far, the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, reported 1,430 dead and 3,238 injured who have already received assistance at field hospitals deployed in La Guaira and Caracas. Additionally, 3,142 affected families are in shelters, and more than 7,500 triage assessments, over 12,000 medical consultations have been conducted, and 7.2 million kilograms of food have been distributed, especially in the state of La Guaira. It is estimated that 30,000 people, including police, firefighters, rescuers, doctors, and psychologists, are working on the emergency.
The UN estimates 50,000 missing, although it is feared the number could be even higher. The crucial 72 hours to find people alive under the rubble have already passed, so a new phase in rescue efforts now begins. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated a 44% probability of up to 10,000 fatalities and a 30% chance that the number could reach 100,000, although they clarified that these numbers are not exact predictions but calculations based on previous earthquakes with similar characteristics.
Meanwhile, the Venezuelan people cling to every saved life as a symbol of resistance. The rescue of the baby, now viral worldwide, becomes an emblem of the fight against adversity in a country battered by nature and crisis.
