The nightmare that Argentine soccer player Lucas Trejo experienced in recent days came to an end, but in the cruelest way. Club Deportivo La Guaira confirmed this Saturday that his wife, Yanina Maranella, and their two children, Aarón and Ainhoa, were found dead after the earthquake that shook Venezuela.
The victims had been missing since the quake and were intensely searched in the area of the Cumanagotto complex, where the family’s apartment was located. As hours passed, it was confirmed that the building had completely collapsed as a result of the tremors, which hampered rescue efforts and ultimately buried all hope.
Through a statement released on its social media, Club Deportivo La Guaira expressed its sorrow and support for the defender: «From DLG we join the grief that overwhelms player Lucas Trejo for the sensitive death of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and his children, Aarón and Ainhoa Trejo. Peace to their souls and comfort for Lucas and all his loved ones.»
At the time of the tragedy, the family was separated. Trejo had traveled with the squad of Club Sport Marítimo de La Guaira to Caracas, where the team was scheduled to play a match against Deportivo Miranda Fútbol Club for the first round of the local cup. Upon returning, the soccer player found a devastating scene: the building where his wife and children lived had completely collapsed. From that moment, he actively joined the rescue efforts alongside relatives, neighbors, and volunteers, removing debris even with his bare hands, in a desperate attempt to find signs of life.
Due to the lack of information, Trejo also turned to social media to share images and details of his loved ones, hoping to receive any clue that could help locate them. In his posts, he explained that he had not been able to contact them since the disaster and asked the community for help.
Meanwhile, his father, José Luis Trejo, had made a public plea for help to travel from Córdoba to Venezuela to accompany his son amid the anguish. «I need to be with him,» he said at the time, while hope for a favorable outcome still lingered. However, this Saturday the worst ending for the family was confirmed.
As search and rescue operations continue in the various areas affected by the earthquake, authorities reported a provisional toll of at least 1,430 dead and more than 4,300 injured. They also indicated that more than 200 people remain trapped under the rubble, while nearly three thousand families lost their homes due to the collapse of entire buildings.
The news has shocked the Argentine and Venezuelan soccer world. Lucas Trejo, a 29-year-old defender from Córdoba, had emigrated to Venezuela to continue his sports career. Now, he must face the deepest pain a human being can experience: losing his entire family in an instant.
