The PRO once again showed its double face. While in the Chamber of Deputies they refused to support an interpellation and motion of censure against Manuel Adorni, in the Senate they filed a formal request for the Chief of Cabinet to attend on July 2 to provide explanations for his «inconsistencies» and «acknowledged falsehoods» in his sworn statements and public declarations.
Peronist Senator José Mayans denounced a maneuver by the ruling party and its allies to shield the official: despite initially agreeing that it could be approved by simple majority, they ultimately demanded two-thirds of the votes. «Yesterday they held a new Labor meeting and came out with the two-thirds requirement. A disgrace,» he fired back to the parliamentary press.
The text signed by the PRO bloc president, Martín Goerling Lara, requests «to summon Mr. Chief of Cabinet of Ministers Manuel Adorni to appear before the chamber of this H. Senate of the Nation on July 2 of this year, for the purpose of being interpellated under the terms of Article 101 of the National Constitution, to consider a motion of censure or removal.»
This request, which until now had only been formally presented by Peronism and the left in both chambers, coincides with the day set for Adorni to present his management report. According to the libertarian bloc’s own leader, Patricia Bullrich, opposition and dialoguing senators have no «predisposition» to listen to the official, but they do to interpellate him.
The document demands that Adorni «provide the corresponding explanations and reports on the evolution of his assets, based on the omissions and inconsistencies that have emerged between his submitted sworn statements, the acknowledged falsehoods, his statements in the Chamber of Deputies of the Nation, and his public declarations.»
Meanwhile, yesterday the ruling party agreed with the PRO and the UCR to delay the interpellation request as much as possible and called a meeting of the Constitutional Affairs Committee to address the Adorni issue on June 30. This deflated the pressure for legislators from both parties to provide quorum for the failed session this Tuesday and help La Libertad Avanza (LLA) postpone the Chief of Cabinet’s explanations.
The document also requests that Adorni «report on the government measures adopted that correspond to him under Article 100 of the National Constitution, especially those derived from subsection 7 (‘To collect the revenues of the Nation and execute the national budget law’), given that he has publicly acknowledged his status as a tax evader, without prejudice to the fact that the lawful origin of the funds he now declares has not yet been demonstrated.»
In parallel, the PRO together with other legislators allied with the Government managed to block a motion of censure against Adorni during the session this Wednesday in the Chamber of Deputies. With 104 affirmative votes, 125 negative votes, and 0 abstentions, the ruling party achieved its rejection. How long will they play with the truth?
