The internal Peronist feud has exploded again. While Javier Milei’s government advances with chainsaw in hand, Kirchnerism and Kicillofism are entangled in a petty fight that highlights the lack of real resistance to austerity. The event in Parque Lezama, with Máximo Kirchner as the sole speaker, was the stage for the latest round. Without mentioning him, Cristina’s son took aim at the Buenos Aires governor: «Those who talk about unity every day aren’t even capable of going to see her in San José to say: ‘Comrade, how are you? Do you need anything?'»
The reproach is not new. Camporistas like Mayra Mendoza repeat the mantra: «They don’t take care of Cristina,» «They don’t ask for her freedom.» Kicillof did not attend the event denouncing the former president’s proscription. His minister Carlos Bianco responded: «He went to visit her last year,» and added that they are «in permanent indirect communication.» Cold and distant, like the relationship between both factions.
But behind the personal snub lies a serious political fact: the PJ does not want to resist. The CGT, allied with Kicillof, let the labor reform and all of Milei’s attacks pass. The governor administers national austerity in the province of Buenos Aires: he cut health, education, and food. Meanwhile, he did nothing for the workers of FATE who resist the closure, nor for those of Secco. Where he could support struggles against layoffs, he looked the other way; where he could support wage recovery, he deducted strike days. And he allocated millions for patrol cars and repression.
On the other side, Máximo Kirchner bet on «being part of the resurrection after this government does whatever it does.» That is, waiting for Milei to leave scorched earth to return. No resistance. At the same event, he responded to Kicillof: «If you want new songs, I’ll lend you mine.»
Peronism leads unions, social movements, the human rights movement, and the women’s movement. It could put these forces into play for a national struggle plan. But time and again it decides to allow destruction to advance. Peronist deputies and senators are complicit in Congress: this week, legislators from Osvaldo Jaldo were absent so that the government could delay the interpellation of Manuel Adorni.
When Máximo promotes Cristina as a candidate but does not drive a real movement for her release, he is promoting himself. They negotiate positions and power quotas within a PJ that hopes to return to government after Milei’s destruction. Kicillof does the same: he lives in a permanent campaign with every minor project and every patrol car. Bianco denies it: «This is not the year for candidacies, it’s the year for political constructions.» But nothing indicates they seek programmatic agreements to overcome the decline.
In this context of daily attacks from the far right and Peronist refusal to resist, the internal fight is a dispute between factions seeking to capitalize on the disaster. Peronism appears exhausted as a movement of struggle. A party of the new working class is needed, without bureaucrats, without traitors, without businessmen. That is what the PTS proposes with Myriam Bregman and Nicolás del Caño, the only alternative that has shown solid resistance. But the left alone is not enough. That is why support committees for Bregman are being promoted to organize struggles and build that party. Because with the usual traitors and without breaking with the IMF, there is no way out for the working people.
