July begins and with it a new round of increases that promises to wreak havoc on Argentines’ pockets. As of Wednesday the 1st, public services, transportation, health insurance, rents and private schools go up again, in a context where the basket of services has accumulated a 919% increase from December 2023 to June 2026. While the government asks for sacrifices from the majority, its own officials, such as spokesman Manuel Adorni, multiply their wealth astronomically, according to official data.
The package of increases includes:
- Electricity: average 1.5% increase in residential rates in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area.
- Gas: increase close to 2.8%, pending final rate schedules.
- Water: AySA rates will rise 3% for users in the metropolitan area.
- Transportation: buses, subways and tolls in the city and province will increase 4.1%, based on a formula combining inflation plus a fixed additional amount.
- Health insurance: most companies will apply increases of 2.1%, although some will reach up to 2.9% depending on the plan contracted.
- Private schools: tuition will increase 5% in the city of Buenos Aires and 3.5% in the province of Buenos Aires, in line with teacher salary agreements.
- Rents: those with inflation-adjusted contracts will face increases of around 8.1% (quarterly), 11% (four-monthly) and 16.7% (semi-annual). Contracts under the old Rent Law will have an annual adjustment of over 120%.
The government maintains that these adjustments are part of the policy of reducing subsidies and continuously updating rates, but the cost of essential services continues to grow far above the ability to pay of broad sectors of the population. With wages and pensions still not recovering lost purchasing power, covering basic expenses demands an ever-larger portion of family income.
Meanwhile, presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni, who in 2023 declared assets of 20 million pesos, today has more than 800 million, an increase of 3,900% in just two and a half years. «The adjustment is always paid by the usual suspects,» complain the ranks of Peronism and social movements. The question hanging in the air is: how much longer will working people continue to bear these rate hikes while officials line their pockets?
The succession of increases once again puts pressure on the budgets of working and retired families. July begins with a new squeeze on the pocket, in a scenario where the basket of public services is already a real drain. The government insists that inflation is slowing, but the numbers speak for themselves: the cost of living gives no respite.
