The Government confirmed this Sunday the death of six Argentine citizens as a result of the devastating earthquakes that shook Venezuela on June 24. Additionally, the Foreign Ministry reported receiving 215 requests for consular assistance and announced the reinforcement of the humanitarian operation in the Caribbean country.
Through a statement released on social media platform X, Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno detailed that, in addition to the six fatalities, one Argentine remains hospitalized and a minor is unaccompanied or in a vulnerable situation. Faced with this scenario, the Government ordered the dispatch of a special consular mission to assist compatriots affected by the tragedy.
Argentina deploys a humanitarian consular mission in Venezuela. Yesterday, Saturday the 27th, the humanitarian consular mission of the Argentine Foreign Ministry arrived in Venezuela, consisting of two officials tasked with assessing the assistance needs of the Argentine community. According to the minister, the team is made up of two officials who arrived in Venezuela on Saturday with the aim of surveying the needs of the Argentine community, issuing documentation, collaborating in the search for missing persons, assisting the injured, and providing support to the families of the fatalities. Likewise, the diplomats conducted a survey of elderly people receiving assistance through Cáritas Venezuela.
The consular deployment represents a significant event, as it occurs almost two years after the rupture of diplomatic relations between Argentina and Venezuela, after the Government of Javier Milei denounced fraud in the Venezuelan presidential elections of July 2024 and the regime of Nicolás Maduro expelled Argentine diplomatic personnel from Caracas.
In parallel, the national government maintains the humanitarian aid operation active. On Friday, a first contingent of 24 brigade members was sent, made up of military and civilian personnel specialized in search and rescue, who are already working alongside Venezuelan authorities and international teams in the areas most affected by the disaster. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense also confirmed that a second assistance team composed of doctors and nurses will depart in the coming hours. This will be joined by the shipment of two water purification plants, which are being prepared by Argentine engineers and will allow the supply of safe water to communities affected by the emergency.
The earthquakes recorded on June 24 caused one of the worst recent tragedies in Venezuela. According to the latest reports, the toll amounts to around 1,450 dead, more than 3,300 injured, and thousands missing. Rescue and humanitarian assistance tasks continue in various regions of the country.
