Mel Robbins: 'Confidence is built through everyday acts of courage'

The American lawyer and speaker, a best-selling author, reveals how the five-second rule can change habits and transform your life.

Mel Robbins: “La confianza se construye con actos de valentía cotidianos”

Mel Robbins, the American lawyer and speaker who became a personal development guru, says the key to changing your life lies in everyday acts of courage, not monumental gestures. «Self-confidence is built through everyday acts of courage,» says the author of bestsellers like The 5 Second Rule and The High 5 Habit.

Robbins, who was born in Missouri in 1968 and earned her law degree from Boston College, experienced a personal hell before reinventing herself. «A decade and a half ago, I hit rock bottom. I nearly threw away almost everything valuable in my life. My anxiety levels were so extreme that I couldn’t get out of bed,» she recounts. At that time, while working as a legal analyst for CNN, she was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. «I built a life that was harder than it needed to be. For a long time, I spoke badly to myself, letting my inner critic always find the dark side of my steps,» she confesses.

But it was precisely that low point that drove her to change. «I sat down there, looked around, and made decisions. I abandoned perfectionism, valued my loved ones more, and accepted that I didn’t have to please others, but to find myself in what I did.» Since then, she has sold over 2 million books in 33 languages, her newsletter has over 800,000 subscribers, and more than 60 million people interact with her social media each month. Her TEDx talks have nearly 30 million views, and on YouTube, she has been seen 150 million times in the last 30 days.

The five-second rule is her signature method. «When you feel that small inner impulse that confronts your tiredness of staying as you are, physically move for five seconds. Don’t let it escape. If you hesitate, you fall back into your old pattern,» she explains. «That small hesitation triggers a mental system designed to stop you. And it happens in less than five seconds.»

Robbins also introduces the concept of «neurobics,» a field of research that uses simple mental exercises to strengthen the brain. «It uses the five physical senses and the emotional sense in unexpected ways, like switching the hand you wear your watch on, dressing with your eyes closed, or reading a text upside down,» she details. «MIT uses this training in its lab schools for children with learning differences.»

The author is blunt in calling motivation «garbage.» «We wait for it as if it were the catapult that throws us out of our problems. Stop waiting for motivation. It’s a myth. You don’t need to be motivated to change,» she states. «The moment you feel that impulse, just count down: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… and take action.»

For Robbins, change starts small. «It’s common for people to want to start by changing the big things in their lives, but that’s not the right path. The tools that allow you to create a better life begin to be applied in matters that are considered minor, but which determine everything that comes after,» she says. «When you’re about to get up in the morning, or hesitate to reply to an email, just apply the rule. No matter how dark, cold, or scary things get, there is a pilot light that never goes out.»
