Milei Jumps Ahead and Celebrates in Colombia Before Official Result: Arrogance or Strategy?

While the noose tightens around Adorni in Congress, the President congratulated De la Espriella without waiting for the final count. A diplomatic move or a new act of arrogance that raises alarms?

Milei se adelanta y festeja en Colombia antes del resultado oficial: ¿soberbia o estrategia?

Political tension surrounding Manuel Adorni deepens in Congress, where various opposition blocs warn that «either they fire him or we remove him.» In this scenario, the ruling party tries to contain the crisis and buy time until the next management report in the Senate. However, provincial allies and sectors of the PRO and UCR have already joined the call for his removal, threatening to paralyze the legislative agenda and placing Javier Milei before a key decision on the continuity of his chief of staff.

But while the political storm rages in Buenos Aires, Milei decided to look north. After the provisional results of the count showed that Abelardo De la Espriella won the runoff in the Colombian elections, Javier Milei rushed to celebrate and congratulate the Colombian far-right candidate, although there is still no concrete confirmation of his victory. A move that many interpret as an attempt to position himself as a regional leader of the right, but also exposes the President’s anxiety to gain an international ally.

Meanwhile, on the local front, Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno denied that the government is seeking a diplomatic exit for Adorni. Quirno reacted to a Clarín article claiming that the Casa Rosada had consulted the Foreign Ministry about procedures to appoint consuls «without going through Congress» and mentioned Adorni, who is under investigation for alleged illicit enrichment. «False. Hug,» Quirno posted on his X account.

He is expected to participate in an event at the Faro Foundation on Tuesday, although he will give his first press conference only next week. Meanwhile, the judicial net tightens. Federal prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita recently ordered a series of evidentiary measures to corroborate the weak alibi Adorni presented. And while the results of those measures are pending, in a parallel case, prosecutor Guillermo Marijuan requested the indictment of the coordinating minister’s brother, Francisco Adorni, for falsifying his sworn statements. The summons seems a preview of what will happen to the former spokesperson, whose tasks at the Casa Rosada are being reduced.

Buenos Aires legislator Darío Nieto questioned the explanation given by Manuel Adorni about the origin of his cryptocurrency assets and stated that the chief of staff’s account is difficult to sustain from a technical standpoint. «I don’t believe him,» he said, analyzing the official’s version of the Bitcoin investments he claimed to have made years ago. Nieto, who said he is knowledgeable about the crypto ecosystem, explained that Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public blockchain, although the identity behind a digital wallet cannot be easily known. «The blockchain is like a great ledger where everything is recorded. It is transparent; you can see all transactions, but you don’t know if that wallet belongs to Manuel Adorni, Darío Nieto, or anyone else,» he stated.

In that regard, he doubted that Adorni had been part of the Bitcoin community in its early years. «The Argentine crypto and blockchain community is one of the most talented in the world; they have very good projects and understand the subject. Precisely, Manuel Adorni was never part of this community, so from the start I don’t believe him,» he said on Splendid AM 990. The PRO leader also questioned the timing of the alleged investments. «In 2014, the Bitcoin community in Argentina was very small; they were people researching the technology, it was not something massive or a traditional investment. It was a very high-risk bet,» he explained.

According to Nieto, the chief of staff’s version presents contradictions and creates a political problem beyond the asset issue. «The biggest problem is that he takes Argentines for fools. He didn’t lie once; he lied several times. First he said everything was in order, then in Congress he said the same, and then another different explanation appears,» he said.

Senator Carolina Moisés stated that the Argentine Congress is facing an unprecedented scenario with the possibility of advancing an interpellation and a potential censure motion against Chief of Staff Manuel Adorni, a constitutional tool that has never been used since its creation. The legislator argued that, in the absence of a decision by the Executive Branch, the Senate will assume the role of institutional control and warned: «Either you fire him or we remove him.»

The head of the Convicción Federal bloc explained that the situation completely changed the planned agenda in the upper house, which had other projects and pending agreements as central themes. «This entire escalation with the Adorni problem has precipitated the Senate agenda being modified with the various requests for interpellation that have been presented,» she said on Splendid AM 990. The senator indicated that there is broad consensus among the different blocs to advance the first stage of the process. «For the interpellation, I believe that with certainty, based on what almost all blocs have expressed, the votes are there,» she stated, recalling that 37 votes are needed to approve the summons.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the State Workers’ Association (ATE), Rodolfo Aguiar, reported that the national government summoned state employees to «renegotiate agreements.» «We are facing pressure or a threat aimed at forcing state employees to give up rights or benefits that are included in our collective agreements. Through intimidation or violence, they intend to force us to sign away our rights,» Aguiar tweeted, adding: «Of course, workers want to discuss our collective agreements, but it must be done freely and voluntarily. In this case, the reason is that the State wants to force us to discuss in order to deepen its policies of destroying rights and anti-union policies.»

They reached maximum figures for this month and were just below April, in the context of a cheap dollar and the opening that worsens the industry crisis. The latest voluntary retirement program implemented nationwide reduced the agency’s workforce in the province by 10%. APINTA warned that «there are no funds» and that «buildings are not in good condition.» The figure represents about 10% of the local workforce and raised alarms within INTA.

In short, while Milei celebrates in Colombia a victory that is not yet official, in Argentina the noose around his chief of staff tightens. Can the President sustain Adorni in the face of evidence? Or will he end up yielding to opposition pressure? What is certain is that the cryptocurrency story convinces no one, and that Congress’s patience has a limit.
