For the first time, Javier Milei felt the weight of the ‘Adorni stone’. The judicial situation of the Chief of Staff caused him to stumble in Congress, and the Government was unable to pass, as it wished, the Inviolability of Private Property law, an extremely relevant issue for the libertarians. In the Government, there was surprise at the situation, blame placed on Patricia Bullrich, and coexistence with Karina Milei becomes increasingly unsustainable.
One of Milei’s premises for keeping Adorni in his position amid the investigation for illicit enrichment was that with his case, the Chief of Staff would not hinder the economy or laws in Congress. The President, from Spain, felt the blow. Due to the former spokesperson’s case, he could not advance on a relevant issue. A real setback.
According to sources within the ruling party, ‘LLA decided not to expose itself to an uncertain vote. La Libertad Avanza entered the chamber but did not sit in their seats. Since Peronism was present, they took advantage to let the session fall due to lack of quorum.’ Parliamentary sources explained that ‘the ruling party had called before the session for the debate on the projects regarding Adorni in the Constitutional Affairs committee (July 1). The call was communicated to the dialoguing blocs to try to ease tensions, something similar to what the ruling party did in the Chamber of Deputies.’ And they concluded: ‘Since in the Senate, radicalism is divided and PRO has its own interpellation project, the outcome of a potential vote was not guaranteed. Given these doubts from PRO, part of the UCR, and some provincial blocs, LLA decided not to expose itself to a defeat and opted to let the session fall.’
Bullrich came out strongly before the accredited press in Congress: ‘Those who came with the interpellation project were them. They didn’t sit down, they didn’t come. Why would we give quorum? They were going to spend two hours talking about corruption, the most corrupt in history,’ said the head of the LLA bloc. From the libertarian side, they warned: ‘Bullrich facilitated the task of interpellating Adorni. They go to committee next Wednesday, issue a report, and with 37 votes they remove him. Because without a report you need two-thirds (48 votes), with a report you lower that to 37 votes. He falls or he falls.’
A reserved source with knowledge of the situation told this outlet: ‘Pato wants to get this issue out of here,’ referring to Bullrich’s move against Adorni. ‘She deactivated the vote today and enabled the debate in committee,’ they reflect. A libertarian, among the many who want the former spokesperson’s removal, joked: ‘What a shame because it was a good day to stone Adorni, heh.’
