Del Caño celebra el fallo de la Corte: "Da la razón a la lucha de docentes y estudiantes"

On a day that promises to heat up tensions in the educational sphere, national deputy for the PTS in the FITU, Nicolás del Caño, stepped into the ring to celebrate the Supreme Court ruling that dismissed the national government’s request to nullify the injunction requiring it to comply with the University Funding Law. The law, which was ratified in Congress, is the result of the struggle of the educational community, which included strikes, takeovers, and massive mobilizations.

Del Caño did not mince words and stated that «the ruling vindicates thousands of teachers, non-teaching staff, and students who opposed the infamous agreement of university authorities and union leadership.» According to the deputy, that agreement was far inferior to what is stipulated in the law, which was won through street struggle. «That is the path to its effective and immediate compliance and for it to also be ratified in the ruling on the merits,» he added.

The Supreme Court ruling represents a major setback for the government, which sought to avoid salary increases for higher education workers. The injunction, which remains in force, requires the Executive to implement the law passed by Congress, which establishes a budget increase for universities. Del Caño highlighted that this measure was made possible thanks to the pressure of the educational community, which did not sit idly by.

«The university funding law was won through strikes, takeovers, and massive mobilizations. That is the path to its effective and immediate compliance and for it to also be ratified in the ruling on the merits,» the deputy insisted. In his speech, Del Caño targeted university authorities and union leadership who, according to him, tried to sign an agreement below what the law establishes.

The Supreme Court ruling is a triumph for sectors that have been fighting for quality public education. The educational community celebrated the decision, although they warn that the fight does not end here. «We will continue to mobilize until the law is fully implemented,» stated teacher unions.

The PTS deputy also took the opportunity to criticize the government for attempting to disregard a law passed by Congress. «It is an outrage against democracy and workers’ rights,» he argued. Del Caño called for intensifying the struggle so that the ruling on the merits is also favorable to the interests of the educational community.

The Supreme Court ruling comes amid strong austerity and cuts to the university budget. The educational community has been denouncing that the government seeks to empty public universities. Therefore, the Court’s decision is seen as a relief, although they warn that the fight is just beginning.

Del Caño concluded his message with a call for unity among workers and students to defend public education. «We are not financed by businessmen nor do we receive state advertising. That is why your financial contribution is essential. Thanks to you, we can continue showing reality from below; denouncing austerity and highlighting the struggles of the working class and peoples around the world,» he closed.
