This Tuesday, Congress experienced a day of high political tension. The opposition tried to interpellate and advance a motion of censure against Chief of Staff Manuel Adorni, but a maneuver by La Libertad Avanza, supported by the PRO, the UCR, and several governors, managed to block the necessary quorum. Only 12 deputies were missing to reach the required 129, and the session collapsed. The motion of censure was referred to the Constitutional Affairs Committee, which will meet only next Tuesday, June 30.
The officialist side breathed a sigh of relief, but the calm is short-lived. The government is already thinking about the session in the next 24 hours, where it will seek to approve the law for the mega-rich, the super RIGI. Meanwhile, the Adorni scandal continues to add chapters. The blocs that did sit down to move against the chief of staff were Unión por la Patria, the Frente de Izquierda, the Coalición Cívica, and some single-member blocs such as those of Marcela Pagano and the Cordoban De la Sota. From the multicolor Provincias Unidas, only 10 members were present, including Lousteau, Coletta, Juliano, and those from Jujuy.
The Frente de Izquierda was the most combative. Nicolás del Caño showed a campaign poster of La Libertad Avanza with the slogan “Adorni is Milei” on the floor, and denounced: “Those who do not sit here today will sit tomorrow, but not to increase pensions, but to give more benefits to the multimillionaires.” Del Plá and Pitrola held up signs that read “out with the corrupt.” The motion of censure promoted by the left includes not only Adorni’s patrimonial irregularities but also the non-compliance with laws on university funding, emergency in disability, and pediatrics.
Germán Martínez, head of the Unión por la Patria caucus, targeted the absentees from the PRO, the UCR, and the MID, and denounced that Governor Pullaro was absent because “Decree 474 was issued, which expands the advance of co-participation for Santa Fe.” Mónica Frade, from the Coalición Cívica, was harsher: “There is a clan that is getting rich,” and accused the absentees of being “the herd” to “violate the national Constitution.” Marcela Pagano taunted Martín Menem: “Did a little contract from Rufus get the better of you?”
Adorni’s nightmare for the government is not over. As long as Javier Milei insists on keeping him as chief of staff, Congress can remove him at any time. The officialist allies are gelatinous: they calculate every step, negotiate, ask for more. The next step is the Senate, which this afternoon will define the format of Thursday’s session, where the Adorni scandal will be included. And in a week, the debate will return to the committees of the Chamber of Deputies. In the meantime, we will have to see if the trip that Judge Lijo and Justice Minister Mahiques took together bears fruit. The case may continue or stall.
